Is Not Speaking English A Disability

Social Security Administration to Approve Disability Benefits for Non-English Speakers

Effective April 27th

Starting April 27th, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will no longer consider the inability to speak English as a barrier to disability benefits approval. This change will benefit individuals who are 45 years of age or older, regardless of their educational background or prior language use.

Previously, the SSA evaluated applicants' English proficiency as a factor in determining their ability to work.

A Step Towards Inclusion

Advocates for disability rights have welcomed this change as a step towards greater inclusion for non-English speakers. They argue that the inability to communicate in English should not be a barrier to accessing essential benefits.

The Trump administration is expected to implement the rule change this summer. It is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of many individuals who have been unable to work due to their language barriers.
