Womens Euro 2022 Quarter Final England 2 1 Spain Aet

England beat Spain in extra time to reach semi-finals

Women's Euro 2022 quarter-final: England 2-1 Spain (AET)

Georgia Stanway's stunning strike and Ella Toone's winner sealed a famous victory for the Lionesses

England are through to the Euro 2022 semi-finals!

The Lionesses came from behind to beat Spain 2-1 in extra time in a thrilling quarter-final at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.

Sarina Wiegman's side trailed to Esther Gonzalez's early opener, but Georgia Stanway's stunning strike in the second half levelled the scores

And it was Ella Toone who popped up in the 113th minute to fire home the winning goal from close range

The victory means England will now face either Sweden or Belgium in the semi-finals at Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Tuesday 26 July (7pm kick-off) before a potential final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 31 July.

It is the first time England have reached the semi-finals of a major tournament since 2019, when they finished third and this is the furthest they have progressed in a Euros since 2009, when they lost to Germany in the final.

The victory was made even more impressive by the fact that England were without captain Millie Bright, who missed the game due to a foot injury, and Lucy Bronze, who was suspended after picking up a yellow card in the group stage victory over Northern Ireland.

But the Lionesses showed great character and resilience to come from behind and win the game.

Stanway's goal was a moment of brilliance, while Toone's winner was a just reward for her tireless work rate.

England will now be confident of going all the way and winning the tournament. They have a talented squad, a great manager and the backing of the home crowd.

So, let's get behind the Lionesses and cheer them on to victory!
